Summer-Fall 2011

As this challenging summer marches toward fall and year’s end, the seemingly chaotic environment continues to stress the structures and systems on which we rely. As we pointed out in our last letter, we are all in the process of adjusting to the “new normal.”

As we enter our 24th year, we are especially proud of the fact that so many of our clients have retained us for multiple engagements, ranging from complete organizational transformation projects to strategic planning. Our firm belief is that any organization can perform at a higher, more efficient level when its employees are truly mission-driven and collaborate authentically across organizational boundaries. So many organizations—more than one would suspect—spin their organizational wheels because they have failed to be strategic and continue to focus on archaic patterns and outdated or misplaced priorities. We help our clients to foster environments in which collaboration is the “gold standard” for idea generation and problem-solving, the organizational mission is the yardstick against which all actions, large or small, are measured, and resources are directed not simply to the accomplishment of tasks but to accomplishment of the right tasks.

How is all this achieved? We work on site, one-on-one, to go beneath the surface—to gather, analyze, and unlock the process knowledge that is held—sometimes so closely that it is in fact hidden—at every organizational level. This is where inefficiencies, misconceptions, duplicative or even archaic patterns, and outdated or misplaced priorities are typically found, and where we begin to uncover opportunities for organizational change. As the renowned physicist Richard Feynman once observed, “You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely nothing about the bird….”
